The company also confirmed that it plans to start shipping 50GB dual layer rewritable BD media later this year.
“The arrival of 50GB Blu-ray Disc media is an important milestone in the evolution of this new format,” said Mike Lucas, director of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Media and Application Solutions Division. “The capacity represents more than four hours of HD quality video, at a 24 Mbps transfer rate, allowing users to take full advantage of Sony’s Blu-ray Disc burners and VAIO desktop and notebook computers.”
Lucas said that Sony’s AccuCORE technology has been re-engineered for Blu-ray Disc media, with its major benefits including scratch guard, archival reliability to prevent data/image corruption and deterioration, stable writing that reduces fluctuation as the disc spins, and temperature durability to prevent warping during severe changes in temperature and humidity.
Sony’s 50GB dual layer recordable disc has a suggested retail price of around $48.

Cowon D2 Now Official

Cowon has been sleeping for most of the year, but lately they’ve woken up and have announced a couple of new players including the iAudio F2, Cowon D1, and the D2. The Cowon D2 is similar to the aforementioned i-Station mini, not only in features, but also in appearance (color-wise at least). Here’s what this player’s got to offer against the Mini:

Korea will get first dibs on this player later this month, and hopefully Cowon will have plans to release a DMB-less version to us drooling folks here in N. Looking down the spec sheet, you won’t find anything that sets this cell phone apart from the competition, but you will be able to see it glistening from miles away. Accessories maker Peter Aloisson has taken a fairly standard looking bar-style mobile phone and encrusted it with diamonds. As a result, the asking price is a cool $1.3 million. Pocket change, right?
The keypad design makes me think of Sony Ericsson’s entry-level handsets for some reason, but the diamonds certainly make this no entry-level phone. Not only do you get the usual white diamonds on this phone, but he’s also opted for rose, gold, and blue varieties as well, just to up to the ante.
As far as actual technical features, it’ll take care of SMS, MMS, E-mail, mobile web, WAP, and JAVA, as well as sporting 29 preset ringtones and an integrated media player. Of course, that’s not why you’d want this phone anyways.

You knew it would only be a matter of time before Microsoft Zune accessories started to pop-up. This one docks the Zune player in a keyboard, and works with Mac or Windows. The Razer Pro|Type Multimedia Keyboard, and Microsoft Zune media player dock should be ready for release in November, when the Zune player is set to release.

The Razer Pro|Type Multimedia Keyboard is said to have 32kB of memory onboard, programmable hot keys, line-out for audio peripherals and USB ports, all in a device that Razer calls: “the world’s most intelligent keyboard.” The Razer Pro|Type Multimedia Keyboard will also be available with an integrated iPod dock.

The 8-core NextDimension Pro and Evo really push the envelope of portability. But then again, the computers have 8 freakin’ cores.Based upon the Intel(R) Xeon(R) Processor 5300 Series, the systems sip only 100W of processing power despite their beefy specs. And the briefcase-sized form comes in handy when you realize there’s room for 12 2.5″ hard drives and 4 PCI or PCIe slots. Plus, the Evo line features built-in RAID with support of 6 SAS or 8 SATA drives. On top of all that, you still get amenities like FireWire and space for up to 24GB of RAM, but how they keep the compact system from melting into expensive goo was not discussed.

We’d love to have one of these setups for mobile HD video editing. Otherwise, we’ll just stick to our MBP and its handy display/battery/keyboard setup. – Mark Wilson

As if the 7.1 surround sound smartphone and king-of-all-knockoffs weren’t enough, today we’re graced with the portable PS3, er, the 3 Cool A816. This laugher sports a design ripped fairly hard from Sony’s PlayStation Portable, but dons a hysterical “PS3 Game Player” logo right across the back, which would absolutely thrill those wanting to play PS3 games without coughing up the dough for a $499 $599 console if, you know, those pesky discs would just fit. Carrying on, the GSM conglomerate also sports a 320 x 240 resolution 3.5-inch screen which is casually referred to as “high-definition capable,” built-in MP3 player and image viewer, video game emulator, 1.3-megapixel camera, TV out, an MP3-based alarm clock, handwriting support, an integrated dictionary, and dual stereo speakers to boot. As expected, there’s no word on price just yet, and even though it’s supposedly available to ship as of this month, we can’t possibly urge you more to resist the temptation on this one. But hell no, I’m certainly not complaining about the new Retro iPod Alarm Clock from Firebox.com. This charming little thing allows you to wake up to your favorite tunes in your iPod playlist every morning, and serves as a charging dock for your iPod.

Who needs boring alarm bells and beeps?

Now that we have iPod compatible vibrators, cool MacBook skins, flashy gold-plated iPods and the retro iPod alarm clocks, I wonder what’s gonna be next.

But honestly, I’d prefer this to the Hello Kitty wave. Anytime.
